Christopher Paul Curtis has created another memorable character in Elijah of Buxton! This historical fiction novel whisks the reader back to the mid-1800s when slavery was popular in the southern U.S.

The communtiy of Buxton represented a safe haven for freed and escaped slaves. This settlement did exist. It is located in southern Ontario in Canada; just north of Lake Erie. The main character is Elijah. He is the first child born free in this community 11 years ago and holds a special place in the hearts of all residents.
