Daniel Pink will be the keynote speaker at the AASL (American Association of School Librarians) conference in Reno, NV. Many librarians have shared positive thoughts regarding his book, A Whole New Mind. I purchased a used copy from Amazon.com and am enjoying it immensely!
He suggests that our society is moving out of the "Information Age" into a "Conceptual Age" where knowledge workers must redefine their jobs to include "high concept" and "high touch".
The author describes 2 different ways of thinking: L-directed and R-directed. You may not have heard these terms, but you probably have heard left brain and right brain. In this book, he shows that L-directed skills (sequential, literal, functional, textual) are no longer enough to succeed past high school. It is the R-directed skills (empathy, emotion, artistry) that are needed to build a successful career.
So far I have only read to page 60, but I have already gained a wealth of information that I can use to further my career as a library media specialist. This is not your typical book about brain research. It is written in a style accessible to all adult readers. The author uses everyday language; not technical jargon.
